Remember how in my last post I said that this blog would be all about exploration, trying new things and getting out of my comfort zone? I’m going to start things off on a great note by completely cheating.
Matt the Miller’s Tavern is a go-to restaurant of mine, and for good reason. I’ve never had a bad meal there. Their cocktails are excellent and their gastropub menu has something for everyone.
There are several Matt the Miller’s locations in central Ohio, including restaurants in Dublin, Grandview and Polaris. There are more located in other parts of Ohio, and one in Carmel, Indiana. For this post, I’ll be talking about my most recent Matt the Miller’s dining experience at the Dublin location.
I introduced my parents to Matt the Miller’s when they came to visit me after I got my first “big girl job” post college. My dad fell in love with it right away, so it makes sense that he chose it for this year’s Father’s Day dinner.
We had a reservation, which is typically a good idea as the restaurant seems to stay pretty busy. We were seated in a great booth near the bar; the perfect spot for my dad and brother to watch the U.S. Open. The round table made it easy to talk to each other, and it sat all five of us comfortably. Service was slower than I’d experienced from Matt the Miller’s in the past, but the restaurant was packed and our waitress appeared to be covering a lot of tables. She was extremely friendly and polite, and attentive whenever she had the chance to be.
Now on to the good part.
I mentioned before that Matt the Miller’s has excellent cocktails, and this one is a favorite of mine. Tonight’s Blueberry Basil Limoncello martini was nearly perfect. It was sweet, but not aggressively sweet. It was smooth and not too strong, and the flavors went really well together. The only issue – that was definitely not basil. Instead, I believe I got some kind of mint. It ended up tasting great, and I might recommend that they just use the mint and name it aptly from now on!
Before we move on, let’s get one thing straight: If you go to Matt the Miller’s without getting their pretzel bites as an appetizer, you’re doing it wrong.
If you want something that screams comfort, this is it. I’m not even sure these are really pretzels. They’re some kind of incredible fried dough that manages to be crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside, sprinkled with salt (is that what makes a pretzel a pretzel? What is the criteria here?). They serve these with a garlic aioli and a tangy mustard dipping sauce that are both to die for. Just do yourself a favor and get these.
I was in the mood for something a bit on the lighter side, so I went with the $11.99 combo plate deal. This combo lets you mix and match a half portion of one of Matt the Miller’s signature flatbreads with a side salad. I opted for the pear and gorgonzola flatbread with the Miller salad, and they were both excellent. The salad had a delicious sweet and sour dressing that was a wonderful compliment to the sweet and tangy pear and gorgonzola combination. I would definitely recommend both menu items.
My dad, meanwhile, celebrated Father’s Day with a burger bigger than his entire face.
He ended up having to take half of it home, and I’ve never known my dad to be the type of person to leave much food on his plate. This thing is MASSIVE.
Luckily, Matt the Miller’s offers a less-massive option for desserts (although they have plenty of huge dessert options, too).
For those who don’t want to OVER-indulge, the menu offers four different dessert minis: Carrot Cake, Chocolate Cake, Cheesecake and Oreo Brownie. I opted for the Oreo Brownie, and it was everything I hoped it would be – rich and chocolatey, but with that light Oreo cream taste too. It was the perfect size to feel like you’ve had dessert without feeling like you overdid it.
I’ll definitely be back to Matt the Miller’s. This was a great meal. Be sure to check out their Sunday brunch, too… They do a wicked buffet.
I’m already looking forward to my next food adventure!
