This is one of those things I wish someone had told me about years before I discovered it myself, so I’m taking it upon myself to tell you now:
There is a herd of bison at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park.
And you can go stare at them as much as you want. For free.
My boyfriend Trevor and I were looking for a fun date idea back in April, and happened to have an absolutely gorgeous day to do whatever we wanted to. Having heard about the bison, I suggested we go check them out. Luckily, he was 100% on board.
Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park is in Galloway, just west of Grove City. It’s a short and scenic drive after getting off of Interstate 270. The bison roam in a large enclosed pasture that is just east of the gorgeous Nature Center (which has a natural stream running through it – very cool!). It’s a short walk from the parking lot to the bison area.
I only made it about five seconds after we caught a glimpse of the first bison before blurting out the joke I’d been planning all day.
Me: Oh, so that one must be that one’s mom.
Me: Yeah, didn’t you see when he left her just a little bit ago? She was like “BISON.”
Get it? Like “bye, son!”
It’s okay, Trevor thought it was stupid too. I’m still proud.
The bison are absolutely not shy, and will get right up near the fence to watch you while you watch them. I believe we counted eight total that were roaming around that evening. At one point, we had a group of about four following us as we walked!
They truly are gorgeous, majestic creatures. It’s remarkably soothing to watch them, and it’s pretty neat when one looks back at you with a similar curiosity.
The bison aren’t the only attraction at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park. This enormous park features a multitude of hiking trails, natural play areas, access points for canoeing and kayaking, and much more. If you’re looking for a free adventure, go check out the bison and do some hiking at this Columbus-area treasure!
