Tucked away at the corner of Northwest Columbus and Dublin is a hidden gem that you may have already driven past hundreds of times without ever stopping. I know I did!
This little sign on Hayden Run Road, between Frantz Road and Riverside Drive, is all that marks one of the most beautiful spots in Central Ohio. Blink and you’ll miss it, but once you know what you’re looking for, it’s easy to find!
There’s a tiny parking lot that you can pull into – it’s often full, but if you come during work/school hours on a weekday you should have no problem finding a spot.
The main boardwalk starts just after this little sign to the east of the parking lot. I love educational signs like this… I’m always looking for chances to learn! Our waterways have an incredible impact on our ecosystem, and it’s vitally important to keep them clean.
After walking down a set of wooden stairs, you’ll find yourself on a long wooden boardwalk that leads you over a creek and into the woods. Listen closely and you can already hear the waterfall!
Take some time to look at and appreciate the high cliff sides and gorgeous vegetation as you make your way along the path. This is an incredibly peaceful walk if you come at a time when there aren’t many visitors!
Eventually, you’ll end up at an observation deck, and… voila!
A beautiful little waterfall, right here in Columbus!
From other photos I’ve seen of this waterfall, the water was very low and slow when I visited. Often, it looks a bit more like this:
Regardless of how much water is or isn’t flowing, this is a beautiful spot. The pool at the bottom of the waterfall was an incredible turquoise color, and the sun was at just the right angle to cause a shimmering reflection to appear on the rock formations above it.
It’s pretty clear that visitors are not supposed to leave the boardwalk, but there is plenty of room to relax and enjoy the view.
There are also two observation decks to the west of the parking lot where you can observe the falls from above. I recommend getting a view from every angle, if possible!
This would be an excellent location to visit for nature photographers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers in general. One day, I hope to come back after packing up a picnic lunch, and to come sit by the waterfall and just enjoy an afternoon here!
I’m always on the lookout for more beautiful spots and hidden gems in the area. If you have a place in mind that you think I should check out, let me know in the comments!
